ACompassion is a desire within us to help others. With effort, we can translate compassion into actions. An experience last weekend showed me this is true. I work part-time in a supermarket across from a building for the elderly. These old people are our main customers, and it’s not hard to lose patience over their slowness. But last Sunday, one aged gentleman appeared to teach me a valuable lesson. This untidy man walked up to my register(收款机)with a box of biscuits. He said he was out of cash, had just moved into his room, and had nothing in his cupboards. He asked if we could let him have the food on trust. He promised to repay me the next day.
I couldn’t help staring at him. I wondered what kind of person he had been ten or twenty years before, and what he would be like if luck had gone his way. I had a hurt in my heart for this kind of human soul, all alone in the world. I told him that I was sorry, but store rules didn’t allow me to do so. I felt stupid and unkind saying this, but I valued my job. Just then, another man, standing behind the first, spoke up. If anything, he looked more pitiable. “Change it to me,” was all he said.
What I had been feeling was pity. Pity is soft and safe and easy. Compassion, on the other hand, is caring in action. I thanked the second man but told him that was not allowed either. Then I reached into my pocket and paid for the biscuits myself. I reached into my pocket because these two men had reached into my heart and taught me compassion.
21. The aged gentleman who wanted to buy the biscuits_________.
A. promised to obey the store rules B. forgot to take any money with him C. hoped to have the food first and pay later D. could not afford anything more expensive
22. The writer acted upon the store rules because_________.
A. he wanted to keep his present job B. he felt no pity for the old gentleman C. he considered the old man dishonest D. he expected someone else to pay for the old man
23. What does the writer learn from his experience?
A. Wealth is more important than anything else B. Helping others is easier said than done C. Experience is better gained through practice D. Obeying the rules means more than compassion.
B
William Butler Yeats, a most famous Irish writer, was born in Dublin on June 13, 1865. His childhood lacked the harmony that was typical of a happy family. Later, Yeats shocked his family by saying that he remembered “little of childhood but its pain”. In fact, he inherited (继承) excellent taste in art from his family—both his father and his brother were painters. But he finally settled on literature, particularly drama and poetry.
Yeats had strong faith in coming of new artistic movements. He set himself the fresh task in founding an Irish national theatre in the late 1890s. His early theatrical experiments, however, were not received favorably at the beginning. He didn’t lose heart, and finally enjoyed success in his poetical drama.
Compared with his dramatic works, Yeats’s poems attract much admiring notice. The subject matter includes love, nature, history, time and aging. Though Yeats generally relied on very traditional forms, he brought modern sensibility(情感) to them. As his literary life progressed, his poetry grew finer and richer, which led him to worldwide recognition.
He had not enjoyed a major public lift since winning the Nobel Prize in 1923. Yet, he continued writing almost to the end of his life. Had Yeats stopped writing at age 40, he would probably now be valued as a minor poet, for there is no other example in literary history of a poet who produces his greatest works between the age of 50 and 75. After Yeats’s death in 1939, W. H. Auden wrote, among others, the falling liners:
Earth, receive an honored guest:
William Yeats is laid to rest.
Let the Irish vessel (船) lie
Emptied of its poetry.
24. Which of the following can describe Yeats’s family?
A. It filled Yeats’s childhood with laughter.
B. It was shocked by Yeats’s choice.
C. It was a typically wealthy family.
D. It had an artistic atmosphere.
25. According to these passage, what do we know about Yeats’s life?
A. Yeats founded the first Irish theater
B. Yeats stuck to modern forms in his poetry.
C. Yeats began to produce his best works from the 1910s.
D. Yeats was not favored by the public until the 1923 Nobel Prize.
26. What kind of feeling is expressed in W.H. Auden’s lines?
A. Envy. B. Sympathy. C. Emptiness. D. Admiration.
27. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Yeats’s literary achievements.
B. Yeats’s historical influence.
C. Yeats’s artistic ambition.
D. Yeats’s national honor.
